It induces electroplating of a thin silver film in the front electrode which absorbs the light. As long as no current flows through the cell, the figures can be observed for a long period of time (retainance effect).

Dans le cas habituel d’un système alphanumérique à plusieurs segments, l'écriture est réalisée par l'envoi d’une impulsion de courant simultanément sur chacun des segments constitutifs du signe à représenter. L'impulsion est calibrée en temps et en amplitude pour laisser passer une quantité de courant déterminée. L'électrolyse produite par cette impulsion provoque un déplacement d’argent de l'électrode arrière vers l'électrode avant, sur laquelle se dépose un mince film d’argent(environ 50 A) opaque à la lumière. Tant qu'aucun courant ne circule dans la cellule, l'affichage se maintient pendant un temps très long(effet de mémoire).
