The best method of approach to a definition of "defamatory" is probably to consider it in relation to the right which the action of defamatory is intended to protect. [The Equalization] program expires in March 1994 unless renewed. In recognition of its unique redistributive objective (which is enshrined in Canada's Constitution), the government has tabled legislation in Parliament to renew the program for five years, beginning April 1, 1994. Payments are expected to grow from $8 billion in 1993-94 to $10.4 billion by 1998-99. 1, record 14, English, - redistributive%20objective

[Le programme de péréquation] expire en mars 1994, à moins qu'il ne soit prolongé. Compte tenu de son objectif tout à fait unique de redistribution(qui est enchâssé dans la Constitution du Canada), le gouvernement a présenté au Parlement un projet de loi visant à renouveler le programme pour cinq ans à compter du 1er avril 1994. Les paiements de péréquation devraient passer de $8 milliards en 1993-94 à $10. 4 milliards en 1998-99. 1, record 14, French, - objectif%20de%20redistribution

There are few pairs of words more frequently misused, each for the other, than "flaunt" and "flout" ... The distinction is really very simple. "Flaunt" means to "show something off proudly or boastfully": "The drum corps proudly flaunts its colors." "Flout" means to "show scorn or contempt for a person or thing": "The speeding driver flouts the law." 3, record 15, English, - flout%20the%20law
Record number: 15, Textual support number: 2 OBS
Confusion of these terms is distressingly common. "Flout" means "to contravene or disregard; to treat with contempt." "Flaunt" means "to show off or parade (something) in an ostentatious manner," but is often incorrectly used for "flout", perhaps because it is misunderstood as a telescoped version of "flout" and "taunt". 4, record 15, English, - flout%20the%20law
Record number: 15, Textual support number: 3 OBS
The use of "flaunt" to mean "to ignore or treat with disdain" is strongly objected by many usage guides, which insist that only "flout" can properly express this meaning ... many regard the senses of "flaunt" and "flout" as entirely unrelated and concerned speakers and writers still continue to keep them separate. 5, record 15, English, - flout%20the%20law

Ce terme un peu cocasse serait né de l’expression «butterfly transaction», rendue fidèlement par «transaction papillon» et qui aurait donné par la suite d’autres expressions : single «transaction butterfly», complex «transaction butterfly» et one «wing butterfly» transaction. Ces termes seraient très utilisés par les fiscalistes. 2, record 16, French, - papillon%20sans%20ailes
