Ballast water is fresh or saltwater held in the ballast tanks and cargo holds of ships. It is used to provide stability and maneuverability during a voyage when ships are not carrying cargo, not carrying heavy enough cargo, or when more stability is required due to rough seas. Ballast water may also be used to add weight so that a ship sinks low enough in the water to pass under bridges and other structures. 2, record 1, English, - ballast%20water

3, record 3, French, - carrefour%20%C3%A0%20niveaux%20diff%C3%A9rents

Center-bearing swing bridge. While swinging, this type of swing bridge is carried entirely on the center pivot; the trailing or balance wheels, which rol1 on a track near the outer edge of the pier, are adjusted with a little clearance so that their only function is to insure lateral stability. When the bridge is closed, the ends are lifted and on the pivot pier independent supports are inserted without lifting so as to carry the live load only. The center supports and end lifts should work simultaneously and be so adjusted that, when the center supports just come to a bearing (with no reaction from the dead load), the ends are lifted to their proper level. 2, record 5, English, - center%2Dbearing%20swing%20bridge

Ponts tournants. 2, record 5, French, - pont%20tournant%20%C3%A0%20pile%20centrale
