PHENOLS CHLORES [2 records]

Record 1 2011-01-12

English

Subject field(s)
  • Biological Sciences
CONT

Toxins or anti-nutritional compounds can often be formed by endogenous enzymes acting on foodstuffs, particularly during the processing of the foods when their structural integrity is diminished, for instance following the rupturing of cellular materials. Alternatively, toxic endogenous substances can be degraded enzymically to nontoxic materials [using] detoxifying enzymes ... Pseudomonas putida has been found to possess dehalogenases which will degrade mono- and dichloroacetates and propionates derived from pesticides and herbicides.... Enzymes can even be used to detoxify nerve gases. The US Army have used an enzyme derived from the nerve fibres of squid and immobilized on agarose beads to render harmless obsolete stocks of the nerve gas soman (1,2,2 trimethyl propylmethyl phosphorofluoridate) and its derivatives.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Sciences biologiques
DEF

DEF

Any of three monochloro derivatives ClC6H4OP of phenol distinguished as ortho-chlorophenol, meta-chlorophenol, and para-chlorophenol and used chiefly as dye intermediates.

DEF

chlorophenols (also known as chlorinated phenols): Group of toxic chemicals created by the chlorination of phenols (e.g., pentachlorophenol) [which are] used as preservatives in paints, drilling muds, photographic solutions, hides and leathers, and textiles, ... as herbicides and insecticides and, most commonly, for wood preservation.

CONT

Low levels of chlorophenols, dioxins and furans can be safely destroyed in properly designed and operated pulp mill power boilers.

  • chlorphenols
  • chlorinated phenols

DEF
