Sous l'effet des changements de température et de salinité, cette circulation «thermohaline» forme un grand mouvement qui touche l'océan mondial. Souvent, notamment dans les articles de vulgarisation, la circulation de l'océan est assimilée à un «tapis roulant» commandé par la plongée des eaux froides qui se forment dans l'Atlantique Nord, principalement en mer de Norvège et en mer du Labrador.
