Régime politique impérial mis sur pied par Napoléon Bonaparte par suite de l'échec de la Révolution française. La politique expansionniste mis de l'avant par l'empereur français a fait de la France la première puissance d’Europe au début du XIXe siècle. Mais les autres puissances européennes se sont liguées contre elle, pour finalement abattre le régime bonapartiste, en 1815. Le neveu de Bonaparte, Louis-Napoléon, organise un coup d’État en 1851, après son élection comme président de la République en 1848, et proclame le Second empire. Ce nouveau régime, s’inspirant de celui de son oncle, se caractérise notamment par la personnalisation du pouvoir, le recours au plébiscite et la poursuite d’une politique de grandeur. Il sera renversé en 1871 après l'humiliante défaite de la France contre la Prusse. 1, record 30, French, - bonapartisme
