In other commercial developments, 3D Systems, Inc. (U.S.), has just introduced a new ink-jet prototyping system, "Multi-Jet Modeling" which uses a printing head with 96 individual jets that deposits a low-melting-temperature thermoplastic. Using the same material the support structure is deposited as thin, needle-like structures.

Le prototypage par jet pour modèles couches minces est similaire dans son principe à une imprimante à jet d’encre. Cette installation de prototypage «dessine» une pièce en cire en trois dimensions à partir d’un fichier CAO. Deux têtes spéciales, animées par une mécanique de traceurs, déposent, l'une sur l'autre, deux couches de cires plastifiées de compositions et de couleurs différentes(...) la couche inférieure sert de support-elle joue le rôle de la feuille lors d’une impression sur papier-et disparaîtra ensuite dans un bain solvanté. Subsiste un prototype dont les caractéristiques sont très voisines d’une cire de fonderie.
