Les termes "débreffage" et "débreffer" ont été donnés comme équivalents de "debriefing" et de "debrief" dans un article paru dans l'Actualité terminologique, no. 4, volume 11, 1978. Il semble, selon cet article, que les termes "débreffage" et "débreffer" soient généralement acceptés au Canada. Mais l'OTAN, malgré l'éclairage canadien sur cette question, a tout de même opté pour le terme "briefing" en anglais comme en français dans son glossaire. D'autre part, avant la deuxième guerre mondiale, on employait dans la francophonie l'expression "faire rapport" pour désigner la notion de "debriefing". Le "debriefing" va dans un seul sens en anglais c'est-à-dire que le responsable interroge son subalterne pour être mis au courant de la situation.
