The aircraft's flight control system primarily comprises a triply redundant command stability augmentation system (CSAS)using fly-by-wire and autostabilization, and an autopilot/flight director (APFD). Coupled with the nav/ attack system, these allow the aircraft to fly with high stability and near-sonic speed at 200 ft (61 m) above ground level in all weathers. Over known flat surfaces, such as southern Iraq during the 1991 Gulf War, altitude can be further reduced by reliance on the radar altimeter alone. 3, record 2, English, - command%20stability%20augmentation%20system

When both the amplitude and the phase information are available, it is possible to synthesize the polarization response for all the polarization states. To synthesize the response, phase information and two orthogonal (transmit and receive) polarization states are required. For example, most spaceborne SAR's (e.g. RADARSAT-2) use the HH and VV polarization configuration to satisfy the orthogonality condition. Three dimensional polarization response plots are typically used to illustrate the polarimetry response for a given target. The following conventions are commonly used: The radar response is normalized between 0 and 1 [.] The horizontal axes are the ellipticity angle ... and the orientation angle ... The ellipticity angle ranges between -45° (right circularly polarized) and +45° (left circularly polarized). When [ellipticity angle equals 0°, we have linear polarization. The orientation angle ... is usually defined between -90° and +90°, but is sometimes defined between 0° and +180°. 2, record 7, English, - ellipticity%20angle

Preprocessing is an important and diverse set of image preparation programs that act to offset problems with the band data and recalculate DN [Digital Number] values that minimize these problems. Among the programs that optimize these values are atmospheric correction (affecting the DNs of surface materials because of radiance from the atmosphere itself, involving attenuation and scattering); Sun illumination geometry; surface-induced geometric distortions; spacecraft velocity and attitude variations (roll, pitch, and yaw); effects of Earth rotation, elevation, curvature (including skew effects), abnormalities of instrument performance (irregularities of detector response and scan mode such as variations in mirror oscillations); loss of specific scan lines (requires destriping), and others. Once performed on the raw data, these adjustments require appropriate radiometric and geometric corrections. 2, record 8, English, - preprocessing

The three common SAR acquisition modes ...: Stripmap SAR, Spotlight SAR, and ScanSAR. ... A Spotlight SAR steers the antenna beam to continuously illuminate a certain region on ground much longer than in the Stripmap case [Carrara et al., 1995]. As a result, the azimuth bandwidth becomes larger, which hence may be exploited to increase the azimuth resolution. ... It offers the possibility to measure different components of the surface current using only a single pass (in case of a spotlight single-pass interferometry configuration). To this purpose the total azimuth bandwidth is divided into different (e.g. two) non-overlapping parts which are processed separately with their individual optimum Doppler centroid values so that the resulting images represent observations from two different aspect angles. Envisat's ASAR [Advanced Synthetic Aperture Radar] instrument is the first permanent spaceborne radar to incorporate dual-polarisation capabilities - the instrument can transmit and receive signals in either horizontal or vertical polarisation. This Alternating Polarisation (AP) mode can improve the capability of a SAR instrument to classify different types of terrain. Because the reflective properties of a surface are dependant on the polarisation of the incoming radar signal, the use of more than one type of polarisation provides valuable extra information. The ASAR AP mode provides two simultaneous images (or channels) of the same scene taken with different radar polarisation options. Since the radar can transmit and receive in both the horizontal (H) and vertical (V) polarisations, researchers can create image pairs, with possible combinations, HH&VV ... HH&HV and VV&VH. A cross-polarisation option employs a channel in which the polarisation signal transmitted by the spacecraft is received on a different polarisation, i.e. transmitted using a horizontal polarisation and received on the vertical for an HV combination, or the reverse for a VH combination. 3, record 10, English, - advanced%20synthetic%20aperture%20radar

Radar Penetration. Radar wavelengths also influence penetrability below target tops to ground surfaces. Depth of penetration increases with wavelength: L and P band radar penetrate deeper than K or X bands. In forests, shorter wavelengths, such as C band, reflect mainly from the first leaves encountered, thus, from the canopy tops. At longer wavelengths, most tree leaves are too small to have much influence on backscatter, although branches will interact, so that canopies are penetrated to varying degrees. 3, record 11, English, - radar%20penetration

4, record 11, French, - p%C3%A9n%C3%A9tration%20du%20radar
