Les techniques de télédétection hyperfréquence passive sont basées sur les mesures du rayonnement hyperfréquence émis naturellement par la surface terrestre. Le rayonnement émis est détecté par un radiomètre hyperfréquence et la quantité de rayonnement est exprimée en général comme une température équivalente hyperfréquence(TB) en Kelvin(K). L'avantage principal de l'utilisation de la télédétection hyperfréquence pour l'observation de la Terre réside dans la capacité de l'énergie hyperfréquence à traverser les nuages et certaines formes de précipitations, et contrairement aux techniques de détection visible, elle n’ est pas dépendante du soleil comme source d’illumination.

The advanced microwave scanning radiometer - EOS (AMSR-E) is one of six sensors aboard Aqua. AMSR-E is a passive microwave radiometer, modified from the advanced Earth observing satellite-II (ADEOS-II) AMSR, designed and provided by JAXA (Japan Space Agency). It observes atmospheric, land, oceanic, and cryospheric parameters, including precipitation, sea surface temperatures, ice concentrations, snow water equivalent, surface wetness, wind speed, atmospheric cloud water, and water vapor.

The Multi-Channel Sea Surface Temperature (MCSST) data are derived from the 5-channel Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometers (AVHRR) on board the NOAA -7, -9. -11 and -14 polar orbiting satellites. Weekly averaged data for both the ascending pass (daytime) and descending pass (nighttime) are provided on an equal-angle grid of 2048 pixels longitude by 1024 pixels latitude (nominally referred to as the 18km resolution). Data are provided in Hierarchical Data Format and in Raw Binary Format.

The multichannel sea surface temperature algorithm (MCSST) has been used to routinely calculate SSTs using a split window approach. Currently this algorithm is applied by the Naval Oceanographic Office (NAVOCEANO) to calculate SSTs at a near real-time rate.

Since 1993 ESA has been conducting several feasibility studies and breadboarding activities for the development of a "Microwave Imaging Radiometer with Aperture Synthesis", known as MIRAS. This Earth-observation instrument is intended particularly for the measurement of soil moisture and ocean salinity on a global scale. The relevance of these two geophysical parameters has been repeatedly emphasised by the scientific community and MIRAS could eventually form the core of an ESA Earth Explorer mission devoted to the global measurement of these two parameters.
