An absorption line is connected with a discoverer's name and called Fraunhofer line. On the absorption line which is very conspicuous, Fraunhofer attached to discriminate the sign of the capital letter or a small letter of the alphabet such as A and B. The absorption line by the earth atmosphere was also contained in it.

First observed by the German physicist Fraunhofer, who designated the principal lines by the letters of the alphabet.

Spectre d’émission et d’absorption. Une étoile émet de la lumière sous différentes formes d’énergies. Cette lumière est recueillie, décomposée en plusieurs bandes d’énergies, et constitue le spectre d’émission de l'étoile. Mais pour nous parvenir, la lumière doit traverser [...] des nuages de gaz, et va alors rencontrer des atomes qui vont absorber des photons d’énergie précise et les renvoyer dans une autre direction. On remarque donc que des bandes d’énergies appelées «raie» manquent. Effectivement, les photons qui ont été absorbés ne sont pas parvenus dans le spectrographe et l'on peut en déduire la nature des composants chimiques du nuage de gaz car chaque atome absorbe des énergies bien déterminées. Ce nouveau spectre est le spectre d’absorption du nuage de gaz. Grâce au spectre de l'étoile, on peut définir la nature de ses éléments chimiques, sa température, et sa vitesse.
