It is defined by an ellipsoid and the relationship between the ellipsoid and a point on the topographic surface established as the origin of datum. This relationship can be defined by six quantities, generally (but not necessarily): the geodetic latitude, longitude, and the height of the origin, the two components of the deflection of the vertical at the origin, and the geodetic azimuth of a line from the origin to some other point.

The gimbaled infrared (IR) sensor ... is a commercially available unit developed ... for the United States Army... The sensor has an RS-170 video output and an NETD of less than 0.100K. It is gimbal-mounted so that [it] can be slewed in both the azimuth and elevation directions at rates approaching 200° per second and accelerations approaching 600°/sec². The azimuth gimbal is capable of continuous rotation. Its absolute pointing accuracy is one part in 4096, or 5 minutes of accuracy.

A function is said to use planar co-ordinates when the decoded guidance angle varies as the angle between the plane containing the receiver antenna and a reference plane. For azimuth functions, the reference plane is the vertical plane containing the runway centre line and the plane containing the receiver antenna is a vertical plane passing through the antenna phase centre.
