Record number: 4, Textual support number: 1 CONT
The heading indicator (HI) uses the principle of rigidity in space for it's operation. The gyro is mounted such that it registers changes around the vertical axis only; i.e. direction changes. The compass card attached to the gyro appears to the pilot as though it is turning. In reality, it and the attached gyro are remaining rigid in space, while the aircraft and case turn about the gyro. The HI is not automatically synchronized with the magnetic compass. It must be set to the compass heading while level on the airport surface prior to take-off. 13, record 4, English, - directional%20gyroscope

Record number: 4, Textual support number: 2 CONT

The attitude indicator (also called the artificial horizon or the gyro horizon) provides the pilot with an artificial horizon as a means of reference when the natural horizon cannot be seen... The natural horizon is represented by a horizon bar on the face of the instrument. The attitude of the aircraft in relation to the horizon is indicated by a split bar or, on some instruments, by a miniature airplane. A pointer at the top indicates degrees of bank on an index scale graduated from 0° to 90° right or left. 1, record 12, English, - split%20bar
