A green, gray, or red metamorphic rock, similar to slate but often having a wavy surface and a distinctive luster imparted by the presence of mica.

Phyllite has a marked tendency to split into sheets or slabs; it may have a sheen on its surfaces due to tiny plates of micas. Its grain size is larger than that of slate but smaller than that of schist.

Le terme «phyllite» (en anglais) est un exemple d’un faux ami particulièrement traître, car il désigne un type de roche correspondant au terme «phyllade» en français, alors que «phyllite» en français indique un minéral appartenant aux phyllosilicates.

phyllade : nom utilisé au féminin par quelques auteurs, mais nom masculin d’après les principaux dictionnaires dont le Grand dictionnaire encyclopédique Larousse (LAROG), le Dictionnaire polytechnique, de Mohamed-O. Bouna-Aly (BESEN) et le Dictionnaire des sciences et techniques du pétrole (MOPET).
