Le seul nom que les Tsiganes se donnent eux-mêmes, c'est le nom de Rom(masculin singulier) qui signifie «époux». Ils emploient aussi Romni(au féminin) et Roma(au pluriel, masculin et féminin). Tous les autres termes servant à identifier les Tsiganes ont été donnés par des non-Rom. Habituellement, le terme de Rom désigne les Tsiganes d’Europe centrale.

Il semblerait que le fait de redresser l'abdomen à la verticale aide la mère à mieux respirer, améliore la circulation sanguine vers l'utérus et le placenta, et aide la bébé à se dégager. Paul Degen, l'inventeur de la chaise, l'a baptisée Roma Birth Wheel, en l'honneur de sa fille Roma, premier bébé à être né de la sorte.
