Séparateurs cycliques. Ces séparateurs sont constitués d’un bobinage réalisé à partir d’un conducteur creux en cuivre de haute conductivité, isolé par des fibres de verre imprégnées de résine époxyde. L’enveloppe du solénoïde pour la fermeture du champ est en acier à bas taux de carbone. Le système réfrigérant comprend un échangeur de température et une pompe pour la circulation de l’eau (désionisée) de réfrigération à travers le bobinage et le générateur de puissance. Les débits d’eau varient de 5 à 10 L/s ]...] Le cœur de la bobine est rempli d’une matrice ferromagnétique de porosité très élevée (95 à 98%). Ces séparateurs fonctionnent suivant trois périodes : alimentation, puis rinçage sous champ, enfin expulsion des produits magnétiques.

Séparateurs à fonctionnement continu. Suivant les constructeurs(Sala ou Krupp), deux conceptions magnétiques existent. Dans l'appareil développé par Krupp, le carrousel traverse le solénoïde. Les lignes de force magnétique sont donc dans le même sens que la rotation du carrousel. [...] Le séparateur construit par Sala comporte un générateur de champ constitué par deux bobinages allongés en cuivre(solénoïde dipôle) entre lesquels passe le carrousel. Le solénoïde dipôle comprend une culasse de fermeture de champ en forme de grille, sur les faces supérieure et inférieure, de façon à laisser passer la pulpe et l'eau de rinçage. Le carrousel est équipé de compartiments renfermant la matrice(laine ou mousse de fer, grille de métal expansé).
