A former province of northwest France, forming most of Mayenne department in the Armorican Massif and Sarthe, sloping down to the Paris basin. Historic capital: Le Mans. A countship, it was attached to Anjou (1126) and was ruled by England until 1203. It was annexed by the French crown (1481).
