Scuttling is the deliberate sinking of a ship by allowing water to flow into the hull. This can be achieved in several ways—seacocks or hatches can be opened to the sea, or holes may be ripped into the hull with brute force or with explosives. Scuttling may be performed to dispose of an abandoned, old, or captured vessel; to prevent the vessel from becoming a navigation hazard; as an act of self-destruction to prevent the ship from being captured by an enemy force (or, in the case of a vessel engaged in illegal activities, by the authorities); as a blockship to restrict navigation through a channel or within a harbor; to provide an artificial reef for divers and marine life; or to alter the flow of rivers. 2, record 11, English, - scuttling

In astronauts, decompression sickness can occur when they go from the higher pressure in the Shuttle to the lower pressure in the suits 1.3 psi. Preparations for an EVA begin about a day ahead of time, when the pressure inside the space shuttle is lowered from 14.7 pounds per square inch (psi equivalent to the pressure at ground level on Earth) ... So, to prevent the bends, the pressure differential between the Shuttle and the suit is reduced to flush the nitrogen slowly from their blood. Then, after the astronauts are suited up, they sit in the airlock for about an hour breathing pure oxygen to eliminate any remaining nitrogen, which can last from 40 to 75 minutes. 5, record 46, English, - decompression%20sickness

4, record 46, French, - mal%20de%20d%C3%A9compression

The Space Shuttle system consists of four primary elements: an orbiter spacecraft, two Solid Rocket Boosters (SRB), an external tank to house fuel and oxidizer and three Space Shuttle main engines. ... The Shuttle will transport cargo into near Earth orbit 100 to 217 nautical miles (115 to 250 statute miles) above the Earth. This cargo or payload is carried in a bay 15 feet in diameter and 60 ft long. Major system requirements are that the orbiter and the two solid rocket boosters be reusable. ... The orbiter has carried a flight crew of up to eight persons. A total of 10 persons could be carried under emergency conditions. The basic mission is 7 days in space. The crew compartment has a shirtsleeve environment, and the acceleration load is never greater than 3 Gs. In its return to Earth, the orbiter has a cross-range maneuvering capability of 1,100 nautical miles (1,265 statute miles). The Space Shuttle is launched in an upright position, with thrust provided by the three Space Shuttle engines and the two SRB. After about 2 minutes, the two boosters are spent and are separated from the external tank. They fall into the ocean at predetermined points and are recovered for reuse. 4, record 54, English, - space%20shuttle

4, record 54, French, - navette%20spatiale%20am%C3%A9ricaine

The Experiment Logistics Module Exposed Section (ELM-ES) is a JEM component which carries experiment payloads, JEM's Small Fine Arm (SFA) and Exposed Facility (EF) system ORUs [Orbital Replaceable Units]. It will supply devices to and from the EF [Exposed Facility]. This ELM-ES will be carried to orbit by the Space Shuttle where it will be operated after being connected to EF. After ELM-ES is connected to the EF, experiment payloads attached to ELM-ES will be removed and attached to the EF using a manipulator. After experiments are finished, payloads will be removed from the EF by a manipulator and returned to the ELM-ES. The Joint Airlock itself has two rooms, the "Equipment Lock" and the "Crewlock." The Equipment Lock is similar to a locker room, in that it is the primary area where the crew members don and doff their spacesuits ... It is also the primary area for servicing the spacesuits and stowing them. The Crewlock, which is separated from the Equipment Lock by a hatch, is where spacewalkers open the outer hatch and actually begin their excursions into space. It is similar in size to the shuttle's airlock. Although the Joint Airlock Module is only 20 feet (6.1 meters) long, getting from one end to the other can be a slow process as astronauts prepare for their EVAs [Extravehicular Activities]. 7, record 65, English, - Quest%20airlock

The Joint Airlock (also known as "Quest") is provided by the U.S. and provides the capability for ISS-based Extravehicular Activity (EVA) using either a U.S. Extravehicular Mobility Unit (EMU) or Russian Orlon EVA suits. Before the launch of this airlock, EVAs were performed from either the U.S. Space Shuttle (while docked) or from the Transfer Chamber on the Service Module. Due to a variety of system and design differences, only U.S. space suits could be used from the Shuttle and only Russian suits could be used from the Service Module. The Joint Airlock alleviates this short term problem by allowing either (or both) spacesuit systems to be used. 8, record 65, English, - Quest%20airlock

9, record 65, French, - sas%20de%20sortie%20Quest

EVA Handrails were developed in the frame of the project for the European Robotic Arm (ERA) to be used on the ISS. The intention behind the development of these handrails was to provide the astronauts with safe handling facilities for their EVAs. The design of the handrails is compliant with the Human Factors Standards. The handrails are adapted for the EVA of astronauts and can therefore be used in every area of manned space. A specialty of the handrails is their ability to compensate thermal expansions of the underground structure [by the use of spacers]. 1, record 71, English, - EVA%20handrail

The Orlan spacesuit was used for Russian EVA's on Salyut, Mir, and the International Space Station. It was designed by the Zvezda OKB [Russia: Experimental Design Bureau], and derived from the Kretchet suit intended for use on the lunar surface. It consisted of flexible limbs attached to a one-piece rigid body/helmet unit. The suit was entered through a hatch in the rear of the torso. The exterior of the hatch housed the life support equipment. Maximum operation time was three hours when the Orlan-D version of the suit was first used on Salyut 6. Later Orlan-DM versions of the suit increased this period to nine hours. The integrated design meant that no external hoses were required as in the American space suits. The suit standard pressure was 0.40 atmospheres, so that a prebreathe period of only 30 minutes was required. Electrical power and communications were via an umbilical cord to the station. Control of the suit was via a panel on the chest, with the markings in mirror image. The cosmonaut viewed the panel using a mirror on the wrist of the suit. 8, record 72, English, - Orlan%20spacesuit

There are two main types of pressurized structure but really unambiguous descriptions of them do not yet exist: (a) those that are held up by ribs or inflated "tyres" and therefore do not need an air lock to allow inward or outward access; (b) those that do need an air lock, have no inflated ribs and therefore must be held up by an internal air pressure slightly above atmospheric .... The ribbed structures are called "air inflated" and the non-ribbed ones "air supported". 6, record 81, English, - air%2Dinflated%20structure

The Secondary Oxygen Pack (SOP) ... was created as a back-up measure to ensure the safety of the astronauts. It is a detachable unit that connects to the bottom of the primary life-support system (PLSS). The pack features two mini tanks that supply a total 30-minutes worth of oxygen enough time to get the astronaut to the Shuttle's airlock. The SOP operates in what scientists call an "open loop". Unlike the PLSS, the SOP doesn't rely on a system that measures or monitors how the oxygen is being used and it does not conserve or recycle oxygen. Instead, the oxygen travels from the PLSS to the rest of the suit, but the contaminated oxygen gets dumped into space. This back-up supply can be activated manually with a valve or automatically when the oxygen pressure in the suit drops below 23.79 kilopascals. 2, record 91, English, - secondary%20oxygen%20pack

2, record 91, French, - r%C3%A9serve%20d%26rsquo%3Boxyg%C3%A8ne%20suppl%C3%A9mentaire

Each of the two berthing ports on Destiny contains a hatch. The aft hatch (hatch to Unity) will be opened and will remain open (unless a situation arises requiring a module to be isolated). The forward hatch will be used as the main access to the Orbiter on future missions until Node 2 arrives. Each hatch has a window. The hatches can be opened or closed from either side. [They] have a pressure interlock feature, which prevents the hatch from being opened if there is a negative pressure across the hatch (higher pressure on the outside of the hatch). 2, record 94, English, - hatch

2, record 94, French, - %C3%A9coutille
