An oxidative bleaching stage often in the third stage of a CEH or CdEH arrangement, where the active component is sodium or calcium hypochlorite in an alkaline medium. 1, record 4, French, - blanchiment%20%C3%A0%20l%26rsquo%3Bhypochlorite

A treatment, most often SO2, but in some cases H2SO4 or HCl, applied a) After a final chlorine dioxide, hyprochlorite or peroxide stage to destroy residual bleaching agent and remove metal ions which prevents brightness loss and avoids fibre degradation, and to create a pH favourable for brightness stability (alkaline pulps tend to yellow on exposure to light and air); b) As a pretreatment before an oxygen stage, which tends to improve both brightness and physical strength, probably by removing metal ions from pulp; and c) Between stages, such as peroxide-hydrosulphite, to eliminate the washing steps by creating acid conditions necessary for the hydrosulphite stage, and to destroy residual peroxide by reduction which would otherwise consume costly hydrosulphite; d) Has been used in place of a chelation stage in a TCF sequence with peroxide. In this application the PH is very important. 1, record 5, English, - acid%20treatment

1, record 5, French, - traitement%20%C3%A0%20l%26rsquo%3Bacide

The object in brightening mechanical pulps is to decolourize or brighten the lignin or other colouring components without dissolving them so that the yield advantage is not lost. Mechanical pulps are brightened by treatment with either an oxidizing (hydrogen peroxide) or a reducing (sodium hydrosulphite) agent or, for higher brightness, a peroxide-hydrosulphite sequence which alters the chromophoric groups in fibres so that their light absorption is diminished. 1, record 6, English, - mechanical%20pulps%20brightening

2, record 6, French, - blanchiment%20des%20p%C3%A2tes%20m%C3%A9caniques

The principle of displacement bleaching is illustrated in Figure 11-24, along with its corresponding flowsheet notation. The development of the Kamyr atmospheric diffusion washer allowed the displacement principle to be applied commercially. Kamyr succeeded in mounting a series of diffusion units in a single tower to accomplish a multi-stage bleaching sequence. Typically, the chlorination is carried out at medium consistency and the chlorinated stock is then pumped to the bottom of the displacement tower incorporating stages EDED (Figure 11-27). To ensure that maximum brightness is achieved, some systems now include a second tower which provides longer retention time between the second displacement with chlorine dioxide and the final wash .... 1, record 8, English, - atmospheric%20diffusion%20washer
