[The method] was innovative in that it involved the concept of a stationary liquid (water) supported on an inert solid (silica), with the result that the solute molecules partitioned between the stationary liquid and a separate mobile liquid phase (chloroform). 4, record 2, French, - chromatographie%20de%20partage

There are two major limitations for the transferred monolayer systems: (1) Thermodynamic instability renders them suffering from lack of long-term durability; (2) the transferring methods require the supporting substrates to be planar, which will not provide large enough surface area for many important applications, such as enzymatic catalysis. Thus, direct graft of phospholipids to solid substrate to form a highly packed monolayer holds great promise in biomembrane mimetic applications. A method, first reported by Pidgeon and Venkataram to bond covalently phospholipids on a silica gel surface for chromatography applications, has greatly inspired our interest in further developing a stable and robust self-assembled lipid monolayer on solid surfaces to mimic the functionality of biomembranes, especially the surface activation of membrane-bound enzymes by the lipid self-assembled monolayers. 2, record 18, English, - lipid%20monolayer%20on%20silica%20gel

Silica Gel Column Chromatography. ... Getting reproducibility when doing silica gel (or alumina) separations with column chromatography can be a problem. If you do not carefully control the water/moisture content of the silica gel and the mobile phase, moisture is added to or removed from the silica gel during the separation. This results in retention times that either increase (with water addition to the silica gel) or decrease (with water loss from the silica gel). ... The reseacher attempting to optimize the flash chromatography of new compounds should investigate the effect of moisture on the separation being attempted. Various glass chromatographic columns containing silica gel with different amounts of moisture can be run side by side to see which column produces the optimum results. 1, record 19, English, - silica%2Dgel%20column%20chromatography

Capillary gel electrophoresis (CGE) is the CE-analog of traditional slab-gel electrophoresis and is used for the size-based separation of biological macromolecules such as olgonucleotides, DNA restriction fragments and proteins. The separation is performed by filling the capillary with a sieve-like matrix, for example, cross-linked polyacrylamide, agarose or even solutions of linear polymer. The main advantages over slab-gel electrophoresis are a wider range of gel matrix and composition, online detection, improved quantification and automation. 1, record 22, English, - capillary%20gel%20electrophoresis

An apparatus used for a process in which the molecules of either a gas or liquid are captured by solid material. Usually the capturing solid is activated carbon, which has a large surface area of capillary form (the carbon can be regenerated by steam, which drives off the adsorbed material in the form of a vapor that can be condensed along with the steam). 2, record 25, English, - adsorber

Devices in which contaminant gases or vapors are retained on the surface of the porous media through which the carrier gas flows are adsorbers. The media most commonly used is activated carbon. Adsorbeurs. The EPA method of screening for volatile compounds involves purging the sample with helium and trapping the volatilized organic compounds on a column of Tenax GC and silica gel at room temperature.
