SOLIDE ADSORBANT [4 records]

Record 1 2009-03-11

English

Subject field(s)
  • Environmental Studies and Analyses
  • Air Conditioning and Heating
  • Chemistry
DEF

A material which has the ability to cause molecules of gases, liquids, or solids to adhere to its internal surfaces without changing the adsorbent physically or chemically.

CONT

Solids that are used to adsorb gases or dissolved substances are called adsorbents; the adsorbed molecules are usually referred to collectively as the adsorbate.

OBS

Certain solid materials, such as silica gel and activated alumina, have this property.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Études et analyses environnementales
  • Conditionnement de l'air et chauffage
  • Chimie
DEF

  • Water Treatment (Water Supply)
DEF

The surface retention of solid, liquid, or gas molecules or of ions by a solid or liquid, as opposed to absorption, the penetration of substances into the bulk of the solid or liquid.

CONT

Adsorption [refers to a] process of extracting a pollutant by causing it to be attracted to and attached to an adsorbent cleaner.

CONT

The adsorption of radioactive waste relates to the capability of soils, clay, etc., to retain the material and hence prevent it from reaching the biosphere.

OBS

Broadly, adsorption at a solid-liquid interphase may be physical, electro-chemical or chemical. ... Ionic adsorption includes common-ion adsorption to the mineral lattice, and ion-exchange between the surface lattice-charges of solid and the ions in solution (the surface-modifying effects utilised in the flotation process).

Domaine(s)
  • Chimie
  • Déchets nucléaires
  • Génie minier
  • Traitement des eaux
DEF

Subject field(s)
  • Analytical Chemistry
DEF

A form of gas chromatography in which the moving phase is a gas and the stationary phase is a surface-active sorbent (charcoal, silica gel, or activated alumina). The separation is achieved by adsorption of the components of a sample.

OBS

The physical states of the mobile and stationary phases give rise to four basic types of chromatography: gas-liquid chromatography (GLC), gas-solid chromatography (GSC), liquid - liquid chromatography (LLC), and liquid-solid chromatography (LSC). Of the four basic types of chromatography, the two gas systems are independent and not subject to subdivisions. Thus the terms "gas-liquid chromatography" and "gas-solid chromatography" adequately identify the techniques involved. The liquid systems are not as easily described and are not mutually exclusive, which can lead to considerable confusion.

Key term(s)
  • gas adsorption chromatography
  • solid gas chromatography

French

Domaine(s)
  • Chimie analytique
DEF

Record 4 1996-10-11

English

Subject field(s)
  • Chemistry
DEF

Oxidative or reductive chemisorption where "reductive" and "oxidative" refer to electron gain or loss on species in the solid. In simple cases it is non-dissociative, i.e. there is a mere transfer of charge between adsorptive and adsorbent in forming the adsorbate.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Chimie
DEF
