The key idea in explaining the way in which structures evolve in the universe is gravitational instability. If material is to be brought together to form structures then a long-range force is required, and gravity is the only known possibility. ... Suppose that at some initial time, say decoupling, there are small irregularities in the distribution of matter. Those regions with more matter will exert a greater gravitational force on their neighbouring regions, and hence tend to draw surrounding material in. This extra material makes them even denser than before, increasing their gravitational attraction and further enhancing their pull on their neighbours ... 2, record 2, English, - gravitational%20instability

Trajectory optimization can be used to enhance robotic motion and, in some examples, minimize the time a robot spends on travel in addition to optimizing or satisfying other requirements or restrictions for a given scenario. Optimization may be used to minimize time elapsed during travel in addition to reducing chances for error. In the example of a robotic picking environment wherein a robotic device is used to pick and place items, trajectory optimization may be used to reduce the chance of dropping an object by losing grip or suction stability creating smooth paths and reducing jerky movements, in addition to optimizing other parameters. Furthermore, optimizing the trajectories of a robot when picking and placing objects can increase the number of picks a robot can complete in a given time period and reduce the amount of time spent fixing errors due to issues like dropping or collisions. 1, record 7, English, - trajectory%20optimization

3, record 19, French, - cumulonimbus%20flammagenitus

It is impossible to observe the transition from quantum to classical behaviour in macroscopic systems because the decoherence occurs on timescales that are too short to be measured. However, it is possible with mesoscopic systems such as atoms and ions. In the Boulder experiment the ion is confined in a magnetic trap and cooled so that quantum effects dominate its behaviour. This behaviour can be observed in quantum interference fringes. [Scientists at the National Institute of Standards and Technology] then introduced various external disturbances to the trap that would cause the quantum behaviour to decohere into classical behaviour. 3, record 26, English, - quantum%20decoherence

2, record 26, Spanish, - decoherencia%20cu%C3%A1ntica

Atomic-force microscopy is similar to scanning-tunneling microscopy (STM) in that it can image surfaces at atomic-scale resolution. The difference between AFM and STM is that AFM does not require that the sample be an electrically conducting material. Like STM, it uses an atomically-sharp tip that is brought very close to the surface. The tip will feel a chemical attraction or repulsion and will move up or down on its supporting cantilever. This movement is monitored by an optical laser beam as the tip is moved laterally across the surface. As in STM, rastering the tip across the surface produces a topographic map of the surface. 3, record 37, English, - atomic%20force%20microscopy

2, record 41, French, - %C3%A9metteur%20d%26rsquo%3Bopportunit%C3%A9

The color of a natural patina may range between black, red and yellow ... 2, record 47, English, - natural%20patina

Existing roads merely need to be covered with the solar panels–which are in fact slabs–without the need for any additional engineering work. These slabs were created so that vehicles, including trucks, can pass along without causing any damage. The panels are made up of photovoltaic cells carefully wrapped in several layers to make the slabs exceptionally resistant. Thin sheets of polycrystalline silicon ... help to capture solar energy which is then converted into electricity. ... In designing the photovoltaic slabs, [the company] also judged important not to create a product that requires the destruction of an existing infrastructure. 4, record 60, English, - photovoltaic%20slab

Ultrasons. 2, record 67, French, - cuve%20de%20d%C3%A9graissage%20sous%20ultrasons

The hydraulic needle effect is an important factor to consider when employing OC [oleoresin capsicum]. This is the consequence of the OC particulates penetrating the soft tissue of the eye. This is due to the correlation between the distance and the amount of pressure (size of the canister) in which it is delivered. Concerns have been raised about the possibility of soft tissue injury, prolonged irritation or possibly infection. Because of the possibility of the hydraulic needle effect, minimum safe distances have been established for each delivery system. 2, record 79, English, - hydraulic%20needle%20effect

In a nuclear plant of Westinghouse design the reactor coolant system components may be forged or cast stainless steel and varies from plant to plant. The reactor coolant pump casings are always cast. Both forged and cast product forms exhibit exceptionally high toughness in the as-build condition; however, the cast material is susceptible to thermal aging. Thermal aging causes significant reduction in fracture toughness, while the tensile strength and yield stress of the materials most often increase. 1, record 80, English, - thermal%20aging

One of the oldest screening devices is the trommel, which can be used wet or dry. Its usual form is cylindrical, with the screening plates forming the side walls, and a downward slope from feed to discharge end. (...) When "washing trommels" are used, the feed is picked up by internal lifters made of angle-iron, and is sprayed. 1, record 99, French, - trommel%20laveur

The jigging cycle for coal may be represented as a sine wave ... in which water velocity is plotted against time. Starting from rest, the water commences to rise through the closely packed bed of coal with increasing velocity. Dilation of this bed begins with the loosening of the uppermost stratum. (In jigging coal it is possible to apply water so as to toss the whole bed solidly upward and then to allow it to open out upward and downward, but this is not feasible with heavy minerals.) As the water column attains a rising velocity of 100 mm./sec., the upper part of the coal bed opens and begins to teeter. Velocity continues to increase, and layer after layer opens until the whole bed is dilated and teetering. Then, as the pulsion stroke passes its peak, the velocity of the water lessens and the suction stroke begins. 5, record 100, English, - dilation
