In the mouse and other mammals studied, including man, ejaculated spermatozoa cannot immediately fertilize an egg. They require a certain period of residence in the female genital tract to become functionally competent cells. As spermatozoa traverse through the female genital tract, they undergo multiple biochemical and physiological changes collectively referred to as capacitation. Only capacitated spermatozoa interact with the extracellular egg coat, the zona pellucida. 1, record 1, English, - capacitated%20spermatozoon

Bindin is an adhesive protein that mediates the binding of sea urchin sperm to the egg during fertilization. Bindin selectively associates with gel-phase phospholipid vesicles in a peripheral fashion. Bindin interacts specifically with sulfated furan on the egg's surface, and directly with the phospholipid bilayer of the sperm. Analysis of a series of deletion mutants of recombinant bindin was undertaken to define the membrane associating domain of bindin. Recombinant and sperm bindin display nearly identical binding kinetics to gel-phase phospholipids and have equivalent saturation points of approx. 250 lipid molecules per molecule of bindin [Source: PASCAL database]. 1, record 5, English, - bindin

Microsurgical Retrieval of Epididymal Sperm. In the past decade, the techniques of epididymal sperm retrieval and micromanipulation to assist fertilization have been two of the most exciting developments in the field of male infertility treatment. [...] We have found that microsurgical epididymal sperm aspiration (MESA) using a glass micropipet technique simultaneous to intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) appears to maximize opportunities of pregnancy for infertile couples with unreconstructable male reproductive tract obstruction. MESA from individual epididymal tubules with a micropuncture technique allows retrieval of high numbers of sperm with optimal quality for immediate use during ICSI as well as for cryopreservation. 1, record 11, English, - microsurgical%20epididymal%20sperm%20aspiration

2, record 13, French, - tube%20acrosomial

IVF/ET is an ART [assisted reproductive technology] technique during which human eggs are fertilized in the laboratory ("in vitro") rather than in the fallopian tube ("in vivo"). For this purpose, the eggs are removed from the woman's ovaries with a fine needle; after maturing in the laboratory, they are fertilized with the husband's sperm; and after fertilization, the dividing embryos are transferred into the wife's reproductive system. 1, record 20, English, - in%20vitro%20fertilization%20and%20embryo%20transfer
