STATOREACTEUR COMBUSTION SUPERSONIQUE [3 records]

Record 1 2004-04-14

English

Subject field(s)
  • Aircraft Propulsion Systems
DEF

A ramjet in which the combustion takes place within a supersonic airflow.

CONT

A ScramJet is a "Supersonic Combustion Ramjet" this device is built to function very similarly to a ramjet with the exception that it may burn hydrogen as a fuel instead of conventional jet-fuel. Because of the different fuel and an optmized design, a ScramJet engine is capable of hypersonic speeds of Mach 6 and above.

Record 2 2004-04-14

English

Subject field(s)
  • Aircraft Propulsion Systems
DEF

A jet-propulsion engine containing neither compressor nor turbine which depends for its operation on the air compression accomplished by the forward motion of the engine.

CONT

Mechanically, the ramjet engine represents the simplest air-breathing jet engine, since it contains no moving parts. ... As with the pulsejet engine, forward velocity is required for ramjet operation to induce air into the combustion chamber, or "ram" the air in, as the name implies.

OBS

ramjet: term and definition standardized by NATO.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Propulsion des aéronefs
DEF

English

Subject field(s)
  • Spacecraft
CONT

In a benchmark test conducted by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency and Gasl, a miniature, gun-launched, scramjet-powered hypersonic vehicle has produced net positive thrust in a free flight environment.

OBS

For this discussion, the term scramjet refers to a dual-mode scramjet, or a scramjet that can operate in supersonic, subsonic and mixed supersonic/subsonic combustion modes, without the use of a second minimum, or nozzle throat.

Key term(s)
  • scramjet powered hypersonic vehicle

Domaine(s)
  • Engins spatiaux
CONT
