Hypersonic propulsion. Color Enhanced Supersonic Hydrogen Flame Through funding from the Hyper-X Program Office at NASA Langley, an experimental study of a dual-mode scramjet combustor is being conducted at the Aerospace Research Laboratory of the University of Virginia. Using conventional instrumentation and multiple laser-based diagnostic techniques, the study aims to further the understanding of the fuel-air mixing and combustion processes within the combustor and to resolve the uncertainty in CFD predictions of such flows. The majority of the experiments are being conducted using a high-enthalpy, continuous-flow facility. This facility simulates Mach 5 flight of a scramjet operating with ramp fuel injection of hydrogen. NASA Langley is performing numerical modeling of the combustor and these results are being compared with the experimental measurements.

[...] La technologie de motorisation privilégiée pour la propulsion hypersonique est le statoréacteur, dont la particularité est qu'il n’ embarque pas de comburant à bord mais capte celui-ci dans l'air environnant : l'air est capté en amont du moteur et comprimé par un système de tuyère convergente. Le mélange carburant embarqué-air comprimé brûle dans la chambre de combustion avant d’être décomprimé, provoquant ainsi l'accélération des gaz et la poussée nécessaire au vol.

The Common Aero Vehicle is a maneuvering reentry vehicle capable of carrying a payload (primarily munitions) down from a suborbital or orbital atmospheric reentry and either impacting a target directly or dispensing munitions at a chosen dispense location and condition. CAV has a relatively high hypersonic lift to drag ratio (L/D) to give good cross-range. CAV cross-range is roughly 1000 times the hypersonic L/D and typical CAV hypersonic L/Ds of 2.0-3.0 thus give 2000-3000 nautical miles of cross-range. CAV needs to be deployed at very high velocities to be effective and Mach numbers less than 20 for suborbital deliveries produce relatively short ranges and cross-ranges.

La Darpa vient de lancer un appel à propositions pour réaliser un drone(sans pilote) spatial hypersonique ou Hypersonic Cruise Vehicle. L'objectif serait d’obtenir, vers 2025, un engin capable de décoller d’une piste conventionnelle, sur préavis court, et de frapper n’ importe où dans le monde un objectif ponctuel, sans dégâts collatéraux. Il serait propulsé par un statoréacteur, aurait un rayon d’action de 17. 000 kms, une vitesse de Mach 5 à 7. Il pourrait emporter une charge de 5, 5 t. Cette dernière pourrait être constituée de bombes intelligentes ou d’un CAV(Common Aéro Vehicule), sorte de planeur hypersonique capable de rentrée dans atmosphère pour frapper un objectif distant de 5. 000 kms. On disposerait ainsi d’une configuration de type marsupial(une mère portant un enfant).

A ramjet engine is a mechanically simple aerospace engine that creates thrust by burning fuel similarly to a normal jet-aircraft engine. The big difference between a jet engine and a ramjet is that a jet-turbine uses fans to compress air to optimize combustion, and a ramjet creates air-compression by the forward motion of air through a partially-restricted intake system. Ramjets have no moving parts, which is a big advantage in comparison to the delicate turbine blades in a normal jet-engine, however ramjet engines typically are not very efficient below speeds of Mach 2.
