La figure du bois peut aussi dépendre des changements dans la direction du fil. Par exemple, le bois madré ou ondé [curly or wavy grain], ce qui est très fréquent chez le bouleau jaune, est formé par des ondulations dans l'orientation des éléments cellulaires. La lumière est réfléchie sous différents angles à la surface du bois, selon l'inclinaison des fibres, de sorte qu'il présente un effet chatoyant créé par des bandes qui alternent du pâle au foncé et varient selon la direction à partir de laquelle on observe le bois. L'érable à sucre présente souvent des fibres dont les ondulations sont plus courtes et beaucoup moins espacées.
