With EFM, each 8 bits of source data is converted into a 14 bit code from a lookup table of the 256 possible combinations. In the resulting fourteen bit code, the '0's are used to denote land or pit and the '1's are used to signal a transition from land to pit or vice versa. Bien que les CD audio et les CD de données aient un aspect identique, n’ essayez pas de lire un CD de données dans un lecteur de Compact Disk. Cela entraînerait le cas échéant une détérioration des haut-parleurs, car les données seraient mal interprétées par le lecteur. Les données sont stockées sur un CD d’une manière numérique, selon un procédé d’enregistrement et de codage particulier. Les informations sont regroupées dans des blocs contenant 2352 octets. Toutefois seuls 2048 octets sont utilisés pour le stockage des données proprement dites, les autres octets étant nécessaires à la synchronisation, à l'identification des blocs et aux contrôles des erreurs. Pour éviter une trop grande alternance de bits de 0 sur 1 et de 1 sur 0, les données ne sont pas stockées par groupe de 8 bits mais de 14 bits.
