Shake, Rattle & Roll Poster. ... Roll: ... The long axis of the International Space Station rotates one complete revolution (end-over-end) during each full orbit around the Earth. Student Activity: Place a globe of the Earth on a table near the centre of the room. Walk around the room so that you are always facing the globe. How must you turn in order that you always face the globe? How much must the International Space Station turn during each orbit around the Earth so that it always has the same face "looking" down at the Earth? Student Challenge: Looking down on the Earth's North Pole, the International Space Station orbits the Earth in a counter-clockwise direction (this is the same direction as the Earth turns on its axis). Sketch the Earth (looking down on the North Pole) and add the orbit of the International Space Station. Show the ISS at three or four points during the orbit. Assuming the Sun is to the left of your diagram, what happens to the solar panels as the ISS travels around the Earth? If the ISS "tumbles" as it orbits the Earth, can you figure out how to keep the solar panels always facing the Sun? 1, record 2, English, - roll

Affiche «Rock’n’roll spatial». [...] Culbutes :[...] 1, record 2, French, - culbute

Shake, Rattle & Roll Poster. Shake: ... The International Space Station undergoes oscillations. If it is given a slight push, such as a bump from the Shuttle while undergoing a docking procedure, the ISS [International Space Station] vibrates with a to-and-fro shaking motion. Student Activity: Docking the Shuttle to an oscillating Space Station is a bit like trying to toss a ball into a swaying bucket from a distance. The trajectory of the ball must be perfect (the launch speed, angle and direction) and synchronized exactly with the motion of the oscillating bucket. Try it. Student Challenge: Clamp one end of a 30 cm steel ruler to the edge of a table so that it sticks straight out. Bend the free end of the ruler downward a few centimetres and release it. Observe what happens. Attach a heavy mass (approximately 200 grams), such as a large blob of putty or Plasticine, to the free end of the ruler. Again, depress the free end of the ruler a few centimetres and release it. Observe what happens. Try doubling the mass or changing the length of the free part of the ruler. Observe what happens to the motion of the ruler as the mass or length changes. Design an experiment to quantitatively measure the effect you have observed. Relate your findings to the oscillating behaviour of the International Space Station as it grows in mass and length. 1, record 3, English, - shake

Affiche «Rock’n’roll spatial». Vibrations :[...] 1, record 3, French, - vibrations

Shake, Rattle & Roll Poster. ... Rattle: ... Even though there are no sounds in the vacuum of space, it is very noisy inside the International Space Station. A lot of the noise comes from the rattling and creaking of fans and events. Student Activity: Acquire a large, clean empty cardboard box (top or bottom removed), big enough to fit easily and comfortably over a person's head, leaving ample room for ventilation. Sit the box on the floor or table, open side down, and tap or scratch lightly on the outside of the box using only your hands. Next, place the box over your head and repeat the procedure. Comment on the loudness of the sounds you hear. Relate this to conditions inside the International Space Station. Student Challenge: Acquire a simple, inexpensive household fan. Develop a method to reduce the amount of noise produced by the fan without reducing the airflow. 1, record 4, English, - rattle

Affiche «Rock’n’roll spatial». [...] Bruits :[...] 1, record 4, French, - bruits
