Pâtes mi-chimiques [...] Le procédé au sulfite neutre de sodium ou procédé au monosulfite(«neutral semichemical process, NSSC process») occupe à lui seul tout le champ de cette catégorie. La liqueur se compose d’une solution de monosulfite de sodium tamponnée par du carbonate ou de l'hydroxyde de sodium afin de maintenir un pH neutre ou légèrement basique. Ce procédé convient particulièrement à la cuisson des bois de feuillus, et a d’ailleurs été mis au point pour permettre l'utilisation du bois dont on avait extrait le tannin.
