A governmental body consisting of one or move judges who sit to adjudicate disputes and administer justices.

court of law: In a wide sense, any duly constituted tribunal administering the laws of the state or nation.

OBS

"Tribunal" is more often used in a literary way, or with reference to a non-judicial body appointed to adjudicate on some disputed question. The distinction between different levels of jurisdiction would be made in English using the terms "superior court" and "inferior court".

Juridiction d’un magistrat ou de plusieurs qui jugent ensemble; ensemble des magistrats qui composent cette juridiction; lieu où ils siègent. «Tribunal» est un terme générique tandis que «cour» s’emploie de façon plus spécifique. En France, une «cour» est un tribunal d’ordre supérieur et «tribunal» désigne surtout les juridictions inférieures du premier degré. Il semble cependant qu’on ne fasse pas la même distinction au Canada puisqu’on parle de la «cour municipale» aussi bien que de la «cour d’appel», et la Loi des tribunaux judiciaires du Québec dénomme un seul tribunal mais plusieurs cours.

Solutions Traduire «Courts» et «courts and tribunals» par le générique «tribunaux». Distinguer, toutefois, «trial court»(tribunal de première instance) de «appeal court»(cour d’appel).

The Supreme Court of Canada is the court of last resort (or the highest court) in Canada. As the final general court of appeal it is the last judicial resort of all litigants. Its jurisdiction embraces both the civil law of the province of Quebec and the common law of the other nine provinces and three territories. As it is a general court of appeal, the Supreme Court of Canada can hear cases in all areas of the law.

La Cour suprême du Canada est le tribunal de dernier ressort(ou plus haute cour) du Canada. En tant que cour générale d’appel de dernière instance, elle constitue le dernier recours judiciaire de toutes les parties. Elle a compétence tant à l'égard des affaires touchant le droit civil du Québec qu'à l'égard des affaires touchant la common law applicable dans les neuf autres provinces et trois territoires. Puisqu'elle est une cour générale d’appel, la Cour suprême du Canada est habilitée à entendre des causes touchant tous les domaines du droit.
