À l’origine une tape de bouche est un bouchon plat en liège ou en bois tourné, employé pour fermer la bouche d’une pièce d’artillerie et empêcher que l’eau de pluie ou de mer, ainsi que l’humidité, ne pénètrent dans son âme. Dans les marines contemporaines, à la mer cette tape est remplacée par un bouchon de caoutchouc et/ou un manchon de toile étanche.
