La consommation maximale d’oxygène(VO2max) survient à une puissance d’exercice appelée puissance maximale aérobie(PMA). Selon l'exercice effectué, la puissance exercée peut être mesurée dans différentes unités. La comparaison entre la puissance déterminée à partir de données physiologiques(VO2, chaleur...) et celle appliquée sur l'environnement(vitesse pour la course à pied) permet d’avoir une idée de l'efficacité technique du sportif(rendement). Cette efficience fait que, en dépit d’une même puissance physiologique dégagée par deux athlètes, un peut avancer plus vite que l'autre(il a un meilleur rendement). Le rendement ou économie de course permet de faire le lien entre PMA et VMA. La VMA peut être définie comme la vitesse de course permettant de solliciter VO2max.
