TEST JUNG [2 records]

Record 1 2016-02-29

English

Subject field(s)
  • Personality Development
  • Psychometry and Psychotechnology
DEF

The test involved randomly showing a patient words on a piece of card and asking the patient to say the first thing that comes to his mind upon seeing the word. Sometimes a patient would not be able to say anything upon seeing the word. He reasoned, after his experiments with his word-association test that our mind develops delayed or long reaction times to particular words. These words generally set off an unconscious emotion, feeling or memory - or a complex as Jung called it.

OBS

Jung ... selected stimulus words to represent common "emotional complexes". The responses were analyzed with reference to reaction time and content ...

OBS

This test is sometimes simply designated as word association test (cf. WOBEH, 1974, p. 381).

CONT

CONT

The diagnostic use of word association tests as a tool declined with the knowledge that response frequency varies with age, socioeconomic and educational level, sex, cultural background, and other personality factors because it appeared that proper interpretation of scores required norms on many subgroups and additional information about the subject. Nevertheless, the Kent-Rosanoff test has retained its position as a standard laboratory technique.

OBS

According to ANAPS, 1968, p. 505, and WOBEH, 1974, p. 381, the Kent-Rosanoff test is a different approach to Jung's free association test. It is sometimes simply designated as word association test (cf. WOBEH, 1974, p. 381).
