perforé, percé, piquage : désigne les trous effectués dans la marge des timbres pour en faciliter la séparation. C’est l’opération de perforation qui transforme le timbre non dentelé en timbre dentelé. En général les trous effectués sont ronds. Sur les timbres, au type Napoléon III non dentelé, divers perçages ont été réalisés avant l’apparition du premier timbre dentelé (percé en ligne, en scie, en arc, etc.).

dentelé, dentelure, perforation : c’est la perforation des bords du timbre dont le but est de faciliter la séparation des timbres. On raconte qu’un employé des chemins de fer Irlandais eut le premier l’idée de denteler les timbres, après avoir vu à l’œuvre une perforatrice de ticket. [...] Un timbre dentelé est caractérisé par le nombre de dents sur deux centimètres. Exemple : dentelé 13 ou dentelé 13[astérisque]14. Un petit instrument appelé odontomètre permet de mesurer le nombre de dents. Dans leur grande majorité les timbres classiques de France sont dentelés 14[astérisque]13½.
