Malfunction in a semi-automatic or automatic weapon where: a. in a closed bolt design, the bolt/breechblock does not recoil sufficiently rearward to feed the next cartridge or cock the firing mechanism, or: b. in an open bolt design, the bolt/breechblock does not recoil sufficiently rearward to be engaged and retained by the sear. 1, record 2, English, - short%20recoil
Record number: 2, Textual support number: 1 OBS
This malfunction is normally caused by the insufficiency of gas or by the gradual fouling of the weapon. Since open bolt mechanisms usually use a fixed firing pin, this condition may result in a runaway weapon, i.e. which continues firing after the trigger is released. 1, record 2, English, - short%20recoil

1, record 2, French, - insuffisance%20de%20recul
Record number: 2, Textual support number: 1 OBS
1, record 2, French, - insuffisance%20de%20recul

In some machine-guns of the open bolt design, part of the trigger mechanism which can engage two alternative surfaces on the sear to operate it, the selector controlling which of these surfaces is engaged and thereby affecting the type of fire obtained. During automatic fire, the tripping lever is pushed down by the selector and holds the sear out of the way of the moving parts as long as the trigger is depressed. During single shot fire, the tripping lever is allowed to raise and is tripped immediately by the moving parts, releasing the sear to engage the bent, e.g. Bren light machine-gun. 1, record 3, English, - tripping%20lever

1, record 3, French, - crochet%20de%20g%C3%A2chette

System of semi-automatic or automatic firing wherein the bolt remains in the rearward position after each shot or burst, preventing cook-off by not having a round remaining in the chamber.
