[Cette dose] peut être établie pour différentes voies d’exposition, sauf l’inhalation. Les plus courantes sont la voie cutanée et la voie orale. Plus la valeur de la DL50 est faible, plus la substance est toxique.

Lorsque le chiffre 50 est placé immédiatement après l’abréviation «DL», sans espace, il figure la plupart du temps en indice. L’adjectif «létal», quoiqu’en dise le Grand Robert, est très rarement orthographié «léthal».

Selon le «Dictionnaire français de médecine et de biologie», de A. Manuila, le terme «dose létale moyenne» est à déconseiller et il faut lui préférer «dose létale médiane» ou «dose létale 50 %».

Ne pas confondre avec «tolérance moyenne»(en anglais :«median tolerance limit»).

Ésta es la concentración de material sometido a prueba en la cual el 50 por ciento de los peces de prueba sobrevive en un periodo específico de exposición (normalmente de 48 a 96 h).
