In keeping with the Westminsterian Parliamentary tradition, the Usher of the Black Rod discharges his or her role as personal attendant and messenger of Her Majesty the Queen or her representative (Governor General or his or her Deputy). The Usher of the Black Rod is the most senior protocol officer in the Parliament of Canada and as such, is responsible for an important ceremonial side of the Senate's work, including the daily Speaker's Parade, royal assent, the Speech from the Throne, the installation of a Governor General and state funerals.
