Tree wells are encountered in off-piste or ungroomed trails and on ungroomed piste boundaries. The risk of encountering a tree well is greatest during and immediately following a heavy snowstorm. Low hanging branches can further contribute to forming a tree well, as they efficiently shelter the area surrounding the trunk. Wells have been observed to be as deep as 20 feet. Wells can also occur near rocks and along streams. 2, record 5, English, - tree%20well

1, record 5, French, - trou%20de%20neige%20%C3%A0%20la%20base%20des%20arbres

A pneumatic rate-of-rise spot detector consists of a small dome-shaped air chamber with a flexible metal diaphragm in the base. A small metering hole allows air to enter and exit the chamber during normal rise and fall of atmospheric temperature and barometric pressure. In the heat of a fire, however, the air within the chamber expands faster than it can escape through the metering hole. This expansion causes the pressure within the chamber to increase, forcing the metal diaphragm against contact points in the alarm circuit. An alarm signal to the system control unit results. This type of detector is most often combined in one unit that also has fixed-temperature capability. 1, record 8, English, - pneumatic%20rate%2Dof%2Drise%20spot%20detector

1, record 8, French, - d%C3%A9tecteur%20ponctuel%20thermov%C3%A9locim%C3%A9trique%20pneumatique

... nacreous clouds ... form at stratospheric altitudes (15-30 km) in local temperature minima caused by atmospheric "lee" waves. The waves form when strong winds blow from the Atlantic across the Scandinavian mountain chain, towards Kiruna. Nacreous clouds are one type of polar stratospheric cloud (PSC). PSCs are an important factor in the breakdown of stratospheric ozone - ozone destruction through reaction with active chlorine compounds proceeds much faster on the surface of cloud particles than it would if the clouds were not there. 3, record 9, English, - polar%20stratospheric%20cloud

A method ... for breaking down coal by compressed air. Air at a pressure of 10,000 to 12,000 pounds per square inch is conveyed in a steel pipe to a tube or shell inserted in a shothole. The air is admitted by opening a shooting valve and is released in the hole by the rupture of a shear pin or disc. The sudden expansion of the air in the confined hole breaks down the coal. 3, record 13, English, - compressed%2Dair%20blasting

2, record 13, French, - tir%20%C3%A0%20l%26rsquo%3Bair%20comprim%C3%A9

Down-hole percussive drills ... consist primarily of a string of drill rods attached to a percussion drill bit at the bottom of the hole. However, instead of the mechanical energy being transmitted to the bit from the surface of the hole via the entire string of rods, the power unit is located "down the hole" immediately above the bit, thus eliminating energy loss through friction of the drill string against the shaft walls and through the threaded connections of the drill rods. 1, record 15, English, - down%2Dthe%2Dhole%20percussion%20drill

1, record 15, French, - marteau%20fond%20de%20trou
