L'amorçage de la déviation avec le sifflet se fait en utilisant une tige relativement souple. En remplaçant cette tige par deux éléments réunis avec un joint à la cardan, on obtient une «genouillère» qui se met en œuvre sans sifflet [...]. Pendant la descente de l'instrument, un dispositif spécial maintient un certain angle entre les deux éléments des tiges. Arrivé au fond, l'outil convenablement orienté se coince d’un côté et l'élément de tige supérieur de l'autre. Après avoir appuyé pour ancrer l'outil, on commence à tourner et l'on fore ainsi 5 à 10 m avant l'alésage au diamètre normal. Cet outil utilisé pour les déviations dans les formations tendres permet d’incliner progressivement l'axe du forage jusqu'à 4 à 5°. Il nécessite souvent un élargissement du fond du trou.

The first really major breakthrough from an optical-communications viewpoint was made by scientists at Corning Glass Works when they developed fibers based on high silicas. ... They achieved these low-loss fibers by a flame-hydrolysis method in which silicon tetrachloride with, if desired, a suitable dopant halide, would react with oxygen to form a white silica soot deposited on a silica mandrel. Rotating the mandrel and translating the flame back and forth causes a buildup of the white soot deposit. By varying the dopant concentration during this buildup, the Corning scientists were also able to achieve a gradient in the composition. Subsequently, the soot is consolidated into a clear glass by an appropriate heat treatment, after which the mandrel is removed. From this "preform", as it is called, a fiber can be drawn, those layers deposited first becoming the core and the later layers the cladding.
