Les experts de l'Organisation mondiale de la santé proposent de grouper, [sous l'étiquette de tumeur mixte müllérienne], les tumeurs maligne de l'endomètre qui reproduisent les aspects morphologiques du blastème müllérien à ses différents stades évolutifs, depuis les structures immatures jusqu'aux structures adultes. Le polymorphisme de l'architecture histologique de ces tumeurs a suscité de nombreuses hypothèses histogénétiques et suggéré toute une série d’appellations : carcinosarcome, tumeur mixte mésodermique, mulléroblastome, tumeur mixte müllérienne, mésoblastome müllérien, sarcome phyllode, etc...
