A mesocyclone is a vortex of air, approximately 2 to 10 miles in diameter, within a convective storm. In a mesocyclone, air rises and rotates around a vertical axis, usually in the same direction as low pressure systems. They are most often associated with a localised low-pressure region within a severe thunderstorm. Such storms can feature strong surface winds and severe hail. Mesocyclones often occur together with updrafts in supercells, where tornadoes may form. Mesocyclones are believed to form when strong changes of wind speed and/or direction with height ("wind shear") sets parts of the lower atmosphere spinning in invisible tube-like rolls. The convective updraft of a thunderstorm is then thought to draw up this spinning air, tilting the rolls' orientation upward (from parallel to the ground to perpendicular) and causing the entire updraft to rotate as a vertical column. 2, record 1, English, - mesocyclone

2, record 1, French, - m%C3%A9socyclone

Atomic-force microscopy is similar to scanning-tunneling microscopy (STM) in that it can image surfaces at atomic-scale resolution. The difference between AFM and STM is that AFM does not require that the sample be an electrically conducting material. Like STM, it uses an atomically-sharp tip that is brought very close to the surface. The tip will feel a chemical attraction or repulsion and will move up or down on its supporting cantilever. This movement is monitored by an optical laser beam as the tip is moved laterally across the surface. As in STM, rastering the tip across the surface produces a topographic map of the surface. 3, record 11, English, - atomic%20force%20microscopy

1, record 31, French, - capacit%C3%A9%20limite

A SQUID Magnetometer is a superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) [which] consists of two superconductors separated by thin insulating layers to form two parallel Josephson junctions. The device may be configured as a magnetometer to detect incredibly small magnetic fields - small enough to measure the magnetic fields in living organisms. Squids have been used to measure the magnetic fields in mouse brains to test whether there might be enough magnetism to attribute their navigational ability to an internal compass. 2, record 35, English, - SQUID%20magnetometer

Using a device called a Josephson junction, a SQUID can detect a change of energy as much as 100 billion times weaker than the electromagnetic energy that moves a compass needle. A Josephson junction is made up of two superconductors, separated by an insulating layer so thin that electrons can pass through. A SQUID consists of tiny loops of superconductors employing Josephson junctions to achieve superposition: each electron moves simultaneously in both directions. Because the current is moving in two opposite directions, the electrons have the ability to perform as qubits (that theoretically could be used to enable quantum computing). SQUIDs have been used for a variety of testing purposes that demand extreme sensitivity, including engineering, medical, and geological equipment. Because they measure changes in a magnetic field with such sensitivity, they do not have to come in contact with a system that they are testing. 3, record 36, English, - superconducting%20quantum%20interference%20device

To grow some vegetables successfully, the gardener must be able to control the conditions in the immediate vicinity of the plants. It is particularly important to control humidity, the effects of wind, and the temperature of the soil and air. Fortunately, there is help available in the form of protective coverings such as hot kaps, mulches and tunnels, which can be used to great advantage in controlling the "microenvironment" of your garden. ... Poly Tunnels. These mini-greenhouses can produce excellent results when used in combination with poly mulches. The tunnel should be about .5 m (18 in.) high and .6 m (24 in.) wide at its base on the soil surface to enclose the mulch. Enclosed aerated static pile (tunnel). Fully enclosed ASP [aerated static pile] composting is a further improvement on bunker-style ASP composting systems. This system uses a positively aerated composting system with below-floor aeration. The aeration floor and the composting pile are housed completely within a long and narrow, cast-in-place concrete enclosure (hence, the tunnel). 1, record 81, English, - enclosed%20aerated%20static%20pile

In the USA, it has been standard practice to drive securing pins through overlaps in the geotextile filter, at 0.6 to 1.5 m centres, even if the joints are sewn or heat-bonded. With unbounded rip-rap on some sites, there is a tendency for the stone to move after placement as it settles into its final resting position. As this has been found to cause tears in the geotextile at the securing pins, it now appears safer to place the geotextile fairly loosely over the prepared surface, using the minimum possible number of securing pins. 1, record 82, English, - securing%20pin

1, record 90, French, - microscopie%20%C3%A0%20force

... the scanning ion-conductance microscope (SICM) ... scans a sample not with a metal or diamond tip but with a glass micropipette containing a tiny electrode. The workers immerse the sample and the pipette in a bath of electrolyte (such as a salt solution) and establish a voltage difference between the electrode within the pipette and another electrode in the bath. A current of ions tends to flow between the electrodes by way of the pipette opening, but when the pipette approaches the surface of the sample, the current weakens. It disappears altogether when the scanned pipette touches the sample, which blocks the opening. Equipped with a feedback mechanism that maintains a constant ion current through the pipette opening, the SICM can profile a sample's topography. The fineness of the pipette does limit the SICM's resolution to about .2 micron (10 nanometers may eventually be feasible). 3, record 96, English, - scanning%20ion%2Dconductance%20microscope

The device is therefore best suited to more specialized functions - studying a living cell's electrical behavior, for example. When a cell is stimulated, so-called ion channels in its membrane open and close, allowing tiny currents of ions to pass. Hansma hopes to detect individual ion channels and study their behavior once the SICM's resolution has been improved. 3, record 96, English, - scanning%20ion%2Dconductance%20microscope

In the STM [scanning tunneling microscope] the "aperture" is a tiny tungsten probe, its tip ground so fine that it may consist of only a single atom and measure just .2 nanometer in width. Piezoelectric controls maneuver the tip to within a nanometer or two of the surface of a conducting specimen so close that the electron clouds of the atom at the probe tip and of the nearest atom of the specimen overlap. When a small voltage is applied to the tip, electrons "tunnel" across the gap, generating a minuscule tunneling current. The strength of the current is exquisitely sensitive to the width of the gap; typically it decreases by a factor of 10 each time the gap is widened by .1 nanometer -half the diameter of an atom. 2, record 98, English, - tunneling%20current
