Soit un sous-système de contrôle du trafic ferroviaire d’un tunnel. [...] Accès à un tunnel ferroviaire. Les trains approchant du tunnel déclenchent un capteur annonçant leur présence. Ils s’arrêtent alors à la signalisation d’entrée du tunnel si elle n’est pas au vert. Une fois que le trafic a commencé dans une direction, la signalisation reste au vert et des trains successifs, de même direction, peuvent entrer librement dans le tunnel. La signalisation redevient rouge lorsque le dernier train (d’une direction donnée) a quitté la section critique. Cependant, un train arrivant dans la direction opposée doit attendre que le trafic de l’autre direction soit terminé.

Dans le respect des décisions et des engagements pris aux sommets de Chambéry en 1997 et de Nîmes en 1999, les deux gouvernements ont décidé la construction d’une nouvelle liaison ferroviaire, mixte marchandises et voyageurs entre Lyon et Turin, avec un tunnel ferroviaire de 52 km environ, foré sous les Alpes en territoire français et italien.

Noter que «tunnel» est un terme générique englobant les notions de «tunnel routier», «tunnel ferroviaire» et «tunnel sous-marin»; cependant le terme est souvent utilisé absolument surtout au sens de «tunnel routier» (voir cette fiche).
