Scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) has proved to be a ... powerful technique in the field of surface science. The fact that sets the STM apart from most other surface sensitive techniques is its ability to resolve the structure of surfaces on an atomic scale, that is atom-by-atom, and furthermore its ability to study the dynamics of surface processes. 4, record 1, English, - scanning%20tunneling%20microscopy

Record number: 1, Textual support number: 1 CONT

Near-field optical microscopy (NFOM) uses a very small light source to beat the diffraction limit of conventional optical microscopy. The sample is placed near the light source so that imaging resolution is comparable to the diameter of the light source. Instrumentation. The near-field light source is made from a glass capillary that is heated with a CO2 [carbon dioxide] laser and pulled to an atomically-sharp tip. The outside of the capillary is coated with silver for reflectivity except for the end of the tip. The near-field source is brought very close to a sample and rastered across it to produce an image. 2, record 3, English, - near%2Dfield%20optical%20microscopy

SNOM is the acronym for "scanning near-field optical microscopy," an alternative name for NSOM (near-field scanning optical microscopy). The basic principle of such a kind of technique is quite simple: light passes through a sub-wavelength diameter aperture and illuminates a sample that is placed within its near field, at a distance much less than the wavelength of the light. The resolution achieved is far better than that which conventional optical microscopes can attain. 4, record 4, English, - scanning%20near%2Dfield%20optical%20microscopy

Microscopists are now in a position to transfer the refinements of the past 100-year techniques for enhancing contrast and highlighting specific features, such as polarization contrast, immunofluorescence and phase contrast to scanning near-field optical microscopy. With existing scanned-probe microscopes we can "see" the nanometer realm of molecules and microcircuits. As the same technology is applied to optical microscopy, we may eventually come to see that world in the familiar terms of light, shadow and color. 6, record 4, English, - scanning%20near%2Dfield%20optical%20microscopy
