Dans le turbo-forage seule la turbine tourne. Son inertie est relativement élevée et sa vitesse grande. Ceci compense l'immobilité du train de tiges. Mais, dans certains cas, il peut être avantageux de réunir le trépan à la turbine par quelques mètres de masse-tige.
