Comment détermine-t-on si un logiciel est ergonomique pour un éventuel utilisateur? En lui faisant subir une série de tests basés sur différents critères d’utilisabilité. Ainsi, on vérifie d’abord si les fonctions du logiciel sont appropriées aux tâches, si les commandes utilisées sont suffisamment cohérentes et transparentes, si les symboles et icones font référence à un code socioculturel reconnu par l'usager. On s’intéressera aussi à la flexibilité du logiciel(est-il aussi facile d’accès tant à l'utilisateur expérimenté qu'au nouveau venu?), à sa contrôlabilité(l'usager en demeure-t-il en contrôle?), au caractère naturel de l'exécution des tâches et à sa simplicité globale.
