The synoptic mode of variability (SMV) refers to changes in atmospheric conditions over periods ranging from 2 to 10 days. SMV is determined by a combination of remote atmospheric teleconnections, sub-seasonal patterns such as atmospheric waves, regional circulations, and local responses of the weather to the synoptic state perturbations. 1, record 14, English, - synoptic%20mode%20of%20variability

2, record 27, French, - a%C3%A9rosol%20primaire

The internal modes of the North Pacific can lead to climatic oscillations through ocean-atmosphere interactions and induce global climate responses. The best example is the Pacific decadal oscillation, but this fails to explain many climate phenomena. Here, another multidecadal variability over the North Pacific is described, found by analyzing reconstructed data covering the past 140 years. It is named the Pacific multidecadal oscillation (PMO), with anomalously high/low [sea surface temperatures] over the northeastern Pacific, and a quasi-60-year cycle. 1, record 32, English, - Pacific%20multidecadal%20oscillation

1, record 39, French, - oscillation%20de%20Madden%2DJulian

Smaller price changes lead to lower inflation volatility as well as to lower price dispersions.

1, record 52, Spanish, - Estudio%20de%20archivos%20sobre%20la%20historia%20del%20clima

The variability of the natural pedo-geochemical content and of the usual content often increases with the size of the portion of the soil mantle investigated. So it is recommended to assess the natural pedo-geochemical value and the usual value at a spatial scale similar to those that it will be used for. For instance, if the natural pedo-geochemical value or the usual value is used to evaluate soil contamination at a local scale, i.e. agricultural plot, contaminated site, watershed, it is necessary to refer to the natural pedo-geochemical value or the usual value that has been determined at the same scale. 1, record 63, English, - usual%20background%20value

No virus has ever been causally associated with CJD [Creutzfeldt-Jacob disease]. If such a virus exists its properties are very unusual. It must be ubiquitous but normally non pathogenic. PrP [prion protein] would be essential for its infectivity e.g. perhaps serving as a receptor. Prion strains exist (more than 20 strains have been identified in mice infected with scrapie prions and several strains from humans). These strains breed true in inbred mice and differ in their incubation times and lesion profiles. This observation and the reluctance to accept because of precedence the existence of a replicating agent lacking a nucleic acid genome has led to the virino hypothesis. It proposes that a small nucleic acid in association eith PrP is the infectious agent. It is not fully consistent with all of the data and no such nucleic acid sequence has ever been detected. 1, record 75, English, - virino

ESA [European Space Agency] has bartered access to three NASA-provided external mounting adaptors (~ 1 m² each) on the International Space Station (ISS) for early utilisation before the mounting sites on ESA's Columbus Orbital Facility become available in 2003. Three of the four space science instruments will be combined in the Solar Monitoring Observatory. These three complementary instruments will measure the solar spectral irradiance with unprecedented accuracy across almost the whole spectrum (17-3000 nm). This range carries 99% of the Sun's energy emission. Apart from the contributions to solar and stellar physics, knowledge of the solar energy flux (and its variations) entering the Earth's atmosphere is of great importance for atmospheric modelling, atmospheric chemistry and climatology. The three instruments are: SOVIM (solar variability and irradiance monitor); SOLSPEC (solar spectral irradiance measurements); SOL-ACES (auto-calibrating extreme ultraviolet and ultraviolet spectrometers). They will be mounted on the ESA-developed Course Pointing Device (CPD) with a pointing accuracy of the order of 1° to compensate for ISS motions. 4, record 76, English, - solar%20variability%20and%20irradiance%20monitor

In statistics, regression analysis is a method for explanation of phenomena and prediction of future events. In the regression analysis, a coefficient of correlation r between random variables X and Y is a quantitative index of association between these two variables. In its squared form, as a coefficient of determination r 2, indicates the amount of variance in the criterion variable Y that is accounted for by the variation in the predictor variable X. In the multiple regression analysis, the set of predictor variables X1, X2, ... is used to explain variability of the criterion variable Y. A multivariate counterpart of the coefficient of determination r 2 is the coefficient of multiple determination, R 2. The square root of the coefficient of multiple determination is the coefficient of multiple correlation, R. 2, record 91, English, - multiple%20determination
