Originally described in the diaries of the missionary Hans Egede Saabye as a see-saw in temperature between Greenland and Denmark (Saabye, 1942), the NAO was later defined by Sir Gilbert Walker as "the tendency for pressure to be low near Iceland in winter when it is high near the Azores and south-west Europe" (Walker, 1924; Walker and Bliss, 1932). Accounting for more than 1/3 of the total variance of the sea level pressure (SLP) field over the North Atlantic, the NAO is most pronounced during the winter months (December through March) due to an increased sea air temperature contrast (Barnston and Livezey, 1987). 4, record 5, English, - North%20Atlantic%20oscillation

When conducting studies and experiments, researchers pay attention to constants and variables to draw conclusions. Constants are the factors that do not change throughout the experiment, and variables are the factors that vary or have the potential to vary. While there are many different kinds of variables, the two most commonly discussed are the dependent and independent variables. … The dependent variable is the factor that receives the stimulus. Researchers measure dependent variables to explore the potential effects of the stimulus, because the aptly named dependent variable is dependent upon the stimulus to be changed. For example, in a study on the relationship between the length of a bicycle ride and the riders' heart rate, the dependent variable is the heart rate, which the length of the bicycle ride may affect. … The independent variable is the factor altered or varied to give various amounts of the stimulus. 3, record 6, English, - dependent%20variable

2, record 6, French, - variable%20d%C3%A9pendante

Radar Penetration. Radar wavelengths also influence penetrability below target tops to ground surfaces. Depth of penetration increases with wavelength: L and P band radar penetrate deeper than K or X bands. In forests, shorter wavelengths, such as C band, reflect mainly from the first leaves encountered, thus, from the canopy tops. At longer wavelengths, most tree leaves are too small to have much influence on backscatter, although branches will interact, so that canopies are penetrated to varying degrees. 3, record 9, English, - radar%20penetration
