For a symmetric airfoil the upper surface is a reflection of the lower surface and the mean camber line will fall on top of the chord line. But in most cases, the mean camber line and the chord line are two separate lines. The maximum distance between the two lines is called the camber, which is a measure of the curvature of the airfoil (high camber means high curvature). Les dispositifs hypersustentateurs sont des surfaces mobiles dont la fonction est de modifier la forme de l'aile afin soit d’en augmenter la portance soit d’en réduire la traînée. Ils sont généralement constitués de volets de courbure et/ou de becs de bord d’attaque. Le bec de bord d’attaque prolonge vers l'avant la forme du profil de l'aile. Cette action a pour conséquence une augmentation de la portance. Les volets de courbure peuvent être positionnés en positif, ils augmentent la courbure de l'aile, augmente la portance tout en augmentant sa traînée aérodynamique. Ils sont utilisés ainsi pour les phases de vol à basse vitesse. Ils sont aussi utilisés en négatif pour conférer une diminution de la courbure réduisant ainsi la traînée et permettant une vitesse de vol plus élevée. 2, record 1, French, - courbure
