The Fairchild C-119 Flying Boxcar (Navy designation R4Q) was an American military transport aircraft developed from the World War II Fairchild C-82 Packet, designed to carry cargo, personnel, litter patients, and mechanized equipment, and to drop cargo and troops by parachute. The first C-119 made its initial flight in November 1947, and by the time production ceased in 1955, more than 1,100 C-119s had been built. Le Fairchild C-119 «Flying Boxcar» est un avion de transport militaire américain conçu par Fairchild juste après la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Il se caractérise par un empennage bipoutre qui facilite le chargement et le déchargement. Sa capacité de transport impressionnante pour l'époque lui a valu son surnom de wagon volant ou «Flying Boxcar». La configuration inhabituelle de cet aéronef bipoutre à nacelle centrale était en grande partie responsable de sa grande polyvalence pour le transport du fret. Deux portes en coquille s’ouvraient à l’arrière du fuselage pour laisser monter les petits véhicules. Les plus gros véhicules pouvaient être chargés et déchargés directement à partir de la soute.
