In 1916, Sir Max Aitken, Lord Beaverbrook, a Canadian who had settled in England, took it upon himself to form a committee that would oversee the creation of an official pictorial record of Canada's effort in the First World War, to be known as the Canadian War Memorials. A similar undertaking was initiated by H.O. McCurry, the director of the National Gallery of Canada from 1939 to 1955, to record the Canadian military presence in the Second World War, resulting in what would be known as the Canadian War Records Collection. A monumental building to house the two war collections, designed by the British architect E.A. Rickards, was also proposed, but the ambitious project was never realized. By 1950 the combined collections from the two wars numbered over 5,000 works. The majority of them were transferred to the Canadian War Museum in 1971.

Officially adopted by Canada in 1921 by the Great War Veterans Association - the founding group of the Royal Canadian Legion - poppies are recognized as the national symbol of remembrance for those wo have served our country, in wartime and in peacetime. Each year, over 15 million poppies are distributed in communities across Canada.

Every year, for about two weeks prior to Remembrance Day - November 11th - The Royal Canadian Legion conducts the Poppy & Remembrance Campaign. The Poppy & Remembrance Campaign is intended to remind Canadians of the debt they owe those who died in the military and merchant navy service of Canada during two world wars, the Korean War and elsewhere. Donations received during the campaign are placed in trust accounts and used throughout the year to assist needy veterans, ex-service members and their families.
